Behind a goal in the 47th minute, East Tennessee State posted a 1-0 win over the UK’s men’s soccer team in UK’s road 2013 opener in front of 1,062 at Taylor-Summers Stadium.
UK (1-1) and ETSU battled through a scoreless first half, before the Bucs struck for the game-winning goal 1:20 into the second half behind Thibault Civalier.
The loss saw the Wildcats play 11 newcomers, including nine freshmen, as UK had three players leave the game due to injury. UK started freshmen Alex Bumpus, Jordan Wilson and Charlie Reymann on the backline, with freshmen Kaelon Fox, Paul Sime, Cameron Mohseni, Sam Miller and Ben Perkins each seeing action, along with transfers Jaytoe Teh and Justin Laird.
On the match’s only goal, the Bucs set up for a corner on the far sideline, playing it short to a streaking Jonny Campbell at the edge of the 18 yard box. Campbell found Nate Hodges, who fired a hard-hit shot that forced a diving save from Kentucky keeper Jack Van Arsdale. Civalier then scooped up the rebound and finished his first goal of the season.
The Bucs posted a 10-5 advantage in shots, with UK holding a 6-5 lead in corner kicks. Van Arsdale made three saves, with ETSU keeper Ryan Coulter making two saves in his first clean sheet.
UK will return to action on Sunday, hosting IPFW at 12 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
